The Purpose

Historically, members of the LGBTQ+ community have been devalued by, mistreated by and excluded from public spaces by others for simply existing. This has become detrimental to the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals, especially our youth and students. To put it into perspective:

  • LGBT students are twice as likely to say that they were not planning on completing high school or going on to college.

  • Gay teens are 8.4 times more likely to report having attempted suicide and 5.9 times more likely to report high levels of depression compared with peers from families that reported no or low levels of family rejection.

  • Studies indicate that between 25% and 50% of homeless youth are LGBT and on the streets because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

  • LGBT youth are overrepresented in foster care, juvenile detention, and among homeless youth.

  • Nearly a fifth of students are physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation and over a tenth because of their gender expression.

  • About two-thirds of LGBT students reported having been sexually harassed in school in the past year.

The fear of loss holds so much power that it becomes more bearable for LGBTQ+ individuals to sacrifice their true identities, becoming smaller and smaller, until they fit into a world that doesn't have nearly enough space. But now, this ends.

You Belong Here is the movement that will use our love for music to create and expand space for all gender and sexuality identities.

As musicians, we all find love in what we do. This is why we share our music. If that love is eliminated, what is left?
